Camping - Outhouses, bugs and...

By Rosemary Bell

During the summer blackout of 2003 I was tent camping at a provincial park in Ontario. It was the perfect place to be. We had our food, propane stove, ice in the cooler. The blackout didn't affect us too much except for one inconvenience - the washrooms.

Procedures stated they had to close the washrooms during a power failure and we were forced to use the outhouses. It wasn't too bad at first, but as the day wore on and evening approached people started leaving the doors open and because of the stench, the stalls were getting filled with flies and bugs.

I could just barely handle the stench but not all the flies and bugs. But I had solution to this problem. Instead of just bringing my flashlight with me I also brought one of my Citronella candles, lit it and placed it on the floor. Waited a minute and all the flies flew up to the ceiling and the crawling bugs scattered to the far corners to get away from the Citronella smell.

If you're not already using citronella candles when you go camping, you might want to just for this.

Happy camping!

A good hint! If you camp a lot, you might want to bring some flypaper with you. Just be careful where you hang it because I hung a roll up once and a poor bird got caught in it.

I have never used fly paper, just swat at them with a newspaper or shoe.

I hope the bird was okay.

Yes, it was OK. I lived at an apartment at the time and hung flypaper on my balcony. I also had a bird feeder and never imagined a bird getting caught in the flypaper. I heard some terrible squawking and ran out and saw some feathers on the concrete. I never used flypaper out there again. But I would use it if I had to use an outhouse or maybe temporarily if I was at a picnic. They're also good to use in enclosed areas like barns, porches, etc. But I usually use a flyswatter - never any chemical bug spray.

Glad to hear the bird was okay. I don't use chemicals of any kind, can't and don't want to. They make me violently ill!
