Dispelling Anger at Christmas

By Rosemary Bell

How saying Merry Christmas can dispel anger?

How often do you come across family, friends, or even strangers who are angry but because it is the holiday season you greet them with a cheery Merry Christmas? Do their faces brighten, does the frown disappear and a great big smile appear? The usual answer is yes.

Just by saying those two words can make a world of difference to the angry cashier or salesclerk, who in some ways can't wait for the holidays to end and have things get back to a normal pace.

Greet the sometimes disgruntled bus driver either when entering or exiting the bus. I always say thank you when I get off the bus and during the holiday season add Merry Christmas or Happy New Year.

Two or three words can make a world of difference to help dispel someone's anger.

It's not always Christmas so I put together this list of two word phrases you can use at other times of the year depending on the situation you may find yourself in. They are in no particular order.

Dispelling Anger Using Two Words

I'm sorry
thank you
you're welcome
miss you
love you
hugs kisses
marry me
good luck
happy anniversary
happy birthday
happy easter
happy retirement
well done
take care
good day
good morning
good evening
good afternoon
good night.
get well
good job
love it
nice job
nice going
nice work
good work
be careful
see ya
bon voyage
====================

And yes I do say Merry Christmas. While I've been known to utter what some say is the politically correct Happy Holidays, we wouldn't have the holidays if it wasn't for Christmas.

So, Merry Christmas to all and a very Happy and Prosperous New Year!

It never ceases to amaze me how we can change a person's attitude with a couple of nice words. I make a point of doing this if I get a grumpy looking salesperson in a store, and they react instantly! Even a simple little smile can made a difference to their day.
btw - I love your Note!

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

Thanks Barb. Two words can make a world of difference and I see it happen all the time.

The note: I wrote this after I had posted my first article yesterday and managed to cope with my anger. I decided to put a different spin to the anger topic.

Tis the season, Merry Christmas!
